That said, for Chara to be playable in any sense some justification has to be made into their influence of the game. The simplest venue for doing so is the often popular interpretation of 'Narrator Chara', in which they are aware and fully assisting Frisk throughout the story, regardless of the route taken. The theory itself has a great amount of in-game material to base it off, a large amount of which can be found here.

This allows for Chara to be pulled from any route as a canon point, which I will touch on more in the personality shifts section. When originally, however, they had been through the following: an initial two Neutral runs, a True Pacifist run- and a recurring 43 Neutral runs, in which one additional monster was killed every RESET.

Their story, however, begins much earlier than the initial point in canon. One hundred years prior to the events in Undertale, Chara climbed Mt Ebott (a mountain from which travelers were rumored to never return) for what is explained in canon as ‘not a very happy reason’. Due to their hate of humanity and a successful future attempt to take their life, it is a sound assumption that Chara’s intention at this time was to put an end to their life, most likely due to long-term abuse. This attempt was unsuccessful, as Chara tripped into a hole leading to the Underground. Injured, Chara cried out for help- this call was answered by Asriel Dreemurr, the prince of monsters and soon to be their closest friend and sibling.

Adopted into the royal family, Chara would have been in a position of great exposure to the trials monsters faced in their human-imposed exile. A lack of sunlight, overcrowding, poor resources (many of which came from a dump), and the ever-present threat of monsters Falling Down were undoubtedly common concerns throughout the kingdom. To the Underground, Chara became a symbol of hope, canonly known as the future of humans and monsters.

It is highly possible that the kindness bestowed upon them by their new family was some of the first, and only, moments of kindness Chara had experienced in their short life. Upon discovery of how monsters could destroy the barrier (through the use of seven human SOULs), their purpose would have seemed explicitly clear to them; inevitably, they would be one of the seven SOULs required to free monsterkind. As the only human in the Underground, their SOUL would reasonably have had to be the first, as, without it, there was no possible way for any monster to go to the Surface and collect the remaining SOULs necessary.

In the True Pacifist run, it is revealed that Chara conspired with Asriel in their final suicide. Using buttercups, Chara slowly poisoned themself to death, giving Asriel the opportunity to absorb their SOUL and pass through the barrier without any monsters realizing what they had done- to them, it would simply appear that Chara had died of an unknown ailment.

From there, he would be capable of going to their village- taking the required amount of SOULs from a group of people Chara may have strongly believed would not be missed… or deserved to die. The information scattered about the Underground sheds light on the fact that humans and monsters can absorb each other’s SOULs; however, one piece of information appears to have been missing, which would have changed the scape of their history dramatically.

Death was not the end for Chara. Upon Asriel absorbing their SOUL, control of his body was shared between them. Asriel explains at the end of the game that it was Chara who picked up their empty body; carrying it through the Barrier. They walked to their village, placing their body in a patch of golden flowers located at the center of the town.

The villagers were understandably upset at the sudden appearance of a monster in their vicinity, carrying the body of a dead child. Asriel and Chara were attacked with intent to kill- and for reasons lost to time and unreliable narration, they did not fight back.

Picking up Chara’s body, Asriel returned them home, collapsing in the throne room and turning to dust. Chara seemingly lingered on, however; through determination or other means, what little was left of them seems to have attached itself to their corpse, only vaguely aware of the proceedings of time; aware enough to commentate on the comfort level of their own coffin.

For an undisclosed amount of time, Chara’s body lay in rest within a coffin located in the basement of New Home, until another human had fallen into the Underground, and their SOUL was taken by Asgore. Disgusted by his actions, Toriel escaped with Chara’s body to the other side of the Underground, sealing herself in the RUINs (literally the farthest location from where Asgore resided). She buried Chara in the chamber they had first fallen in, growing a patch of golden flowers where they had fallen.

Though it is questionable as to whether all the fallen humans from that point fell upon their grave, one most certainly did. The eighth fallen human, Frisk, tumbled down upon those golden flowers. Injured by their fall, they cried out for help.

Chara answered.

Canon Personality:
Maybe, the truth is... Chara wasn't really the greatest person.

Said the pot to the kettle.

Chara is in a great many ways, a mystery. Much of the information we learn about their personality occurs in a similar fashion to Asriel; very late in both the Pacifist and No Mercy runs of the game, alluding to a huge amount of information that we do not have and may never see. What can be understood about Chara comes from a great many venues and is subject to a diverse amount of debate across the internet...mostly tumblr. Very passionately tumblr.

They'd likely enjoy the strife they're causing.

Chara is the adopted child of the Dreemurr family, and has been described as 'not the greatest person'. Despite this, similar to Frisk Chara is somewhat of a blank slate. They have no definable gender, race, age or background, leaving them open to a slew of projection in a much more negative connotation. Undertale allows for this through the use of continually vague statements regarding both them and their past; including a strong hate for humanity, which alludes to somewhat of a difficult, if not nightmarish experience as a child growing up on the Surface.

The reason for their fall is explicitly stated as being due to this; their unreserved lust for carnage against humanity once in the position to do so is ultimately the reason their plans fail. They are shown as a child with a slightly paler skin tone to Frisk, open eyes, and a wide smile. Unless you piss them off at which point they look somewhat more of an Eldritch horror.

It's easy to see that this child, among all else, did have a very strong personality in comparison to Asriel's more sensitive nature. Among the few instances that shed light onto Chara, more than once the allusion of them calling Asriel out on being a crybaby comes into play. They were also capable of not only suggesting but convincing their sibling into helping them die through buttercup poisoning. This would have been a very long, very painful manner of death...if not an incredibly crafty one.

The above also alludes to an almost unerring amount of intelligence; in allowing themselves to succumb to this illness, rather than seeking a less painful option, Chara uses the monsters' lack of understanding of human ailments to play the fool, leaving the circumstances of their death as something tragic, but not altogether the monster’s fault. Considering that out of all the monsters who may have known Chara, Asriel is the only one who takes it upon himself to give their dead sibling a bad rep ~~because I mean it's not like you just tried to destroy the world or anything. Go for gold, kiddo~~ it's very likely that this more insidious side of their personality was not something that was shown to others on a day to day basis, giving an indication of a 'Golden Child' around those older or more capable of speaking up against them.

The No Mercy run also allows for some insight into how Chara views monsters as a whole. Within the gameplay, the large majority of monsters are one to two hit kills, easily crumbling under the strength of a less than happy human child and their Determination. Sucks for them, but it also allows us to question the time in which Chara was alive and did not act out against the creatures with which they made a family. Even injured during their fall, there is no reason that Chara could not have recuperated and simply begun their acts of aggression at this time- indicating that, regardless of how good or evil they may be, the focus of their ire was never initially monsters themselves.

Whilst it is questionable as to whether Chara particularly cared for monsters as a whole, there are indications of affection for their family. Within the videotapes found at the True Lab, Asriel and Chara proceed to show a sense of good-natured teasing towards each other; ha ha! Now you're smiling for nooo reason! Whilst Asriel was compliant to Chara when placed under pressure, regardless of how much he didn't like the things they were doing, Chara was also capable of showing a willingness to express themself in ways that made their adoptive sibling and best friend happy.

In a similar fashion to this, pieces of text within New Home also indicate changes in emotion when compared to how Chara discusses objects up to that point, even when compared to the Pacifist run. ⚹Still has that sweater, as well as the way they only answer in ellipses when viewing a photo within their bedroom shows that there are still things that do get to this child, even at a point where they've been and will continue to mercilessly slaughter anyone in their path.

At this stage, one can begin to connect even the No Mercy style of Chara to the Pacifist Run. Much of the 'favor text' that directly speaks to Frisk carries somewhat of an impatient or sarcastic air at all times; even to the point of being downright morbid. This includes flippant commentary upon their own deathbed;⚹What a comfortable bed! If you laid down here, you might not ever get back up. Even in this run, however, there are indications of things that do get to them emotionally; more ellipses at the wake of Toriel's fight. ⚹Perhaps...you can SAVE someone else.

The major theme to Chara is their connection to Frisk and the amount of LOVE (LV) accrued in the game. As explained below, LOVE is the ability for one to emotionally distance themselves in battle, effectively causing their attack to increase, whilst also taking lesser damage. For a child who appears as flippant and disconnected as Chara, this is integral to their personality.

Frisk is openly admitted to being their reason for waking up. The more LV Frisk gains, the further their 'borrowed' SOUL is distanced, adding to an already distanced personality. It brings to light a level of dependence on Frisk that begins from the moment of their first fight, and does not end until, to be cheap and tawdry

⚹The End.

In summation, Chara is a child with many facets. They are the Demon That Comes When You Call Its Name, they are the future of humans and monsters. They are a sibling, a manipulator, and a child. It's the connections strongest to them that will continue to shape them in both good and bad ways, ultimately where Chara stands in the black and white of good and evil... in a way that can only truly be perceived by a child.

Personality Shifts:
SOL RAVEH
Rather than detail this all out again, this information has been covered in their previous app. The most important changes that came to Chara during this time were mostly due to their forced interactions and reliance on others, which allowed them to create positive connections and associations. Chara was pushed out of their negative and outright hostile ways of thinking, coming to care for others as they began acknowledging more than just the bad qualities people portrayed.

Ultimately, the people Chara connected with were influential enough for them to discard their intentions of returning home and destroying the world; with the unfortunate exchange of their own person in turn. Alongside Frisk, Chara attempted what was seemingly impossible; ERASURE. Scattering themself across space and time, they effectively ensured those still in the castle lost their memories.

LIFEAFTR
Arriving in LifeAftr was, considering the above, quite the shock. Immediately attempting damage control, Chara and Frisk assumed false identities, afraid that their names would spark recognition in the few people who had followed them from the castle in the mist.

Because of this, Tim and Frisk remained the closest bonds Chara had on the islands. Their bond with both developed radically, with Chara coming into conflict with Frisk for the first time since they'd met, and their trust of Tim expanding into something near unfaltering. Though such terms are still ones Chara refuses to use, the shack the three had taken as their own was often thought of as home- and the two people living with them their family.

In their first months in LifeAftr, Chara's intentions quickly narrowed onto a few, smaller objectives; keep Frisk and Tim safe, find the answer to true ERASURE, get out. Even so, the continued loss of people who didn't even remember them left its strain. Sans and Wade, disappearing months apart from each other, was the catalyst of the first argument between Chara and Frisk that had Chara abandoning their false identity and throwing themself into- anything. They gardened. They explored. They fought; alone, and with others.

They failed to guard their heart against those others. Lup and Ren, in particular, became very close; one understanding their experiences in Frisk's body almost too well, the other proving to be someone Chara desperately wished to protect. This connection with Lup was near vital in Chara beginning to question their intent to die, as the way their life had gone could no longer be seen as punishment for being a terrible person. If someone like Lup could experience something so similar, then perhaps, just maybe... what they'd been through hadn't been fair at all.

It was in the midst of this revelation that Chara left LifeAftr, not having had the time to decide what it was they truly wanted.

CANON UPDATE
And prior to returning to LifeAftr, I'm ~~cheating~~ taking the chance to canon update their history, slightly! Their initial runs remain the same, with a few extensions;

Chara has now been through a total of 107 aborted No Mercy runs, with one additional monster killed each RESET.

In addition, there have been a further 3 Neutral runs, and one True Ending.

It's this second True Ending which Chara is now coming from, having departed as Frisk and company leave the Underground. The main reason for this change was to allow Chara to have a little closure- they've been through and done everything they wanted to do, and things have been left on a happy note.

There is no longer any obligation to return.

Abilities:
Much of Chara's ability comes from having access to Frisk's Determination, as well as their own. The ability for a human soul to continue to reside outside of the (deceased) body is explained by Alphys as being a human only ability, and the undocumented capability for the human soul to cause SAVE and LOAD states can similarly be explained as also being such. When in unison with Frisk, Chara can:

⚹Create SAVE states which allow the author to LOAD back to that point in the timeline- only one may be created at any given time, and requires something to cause inspiration that triggers a bit of 'Determination excretion'. You know how when a dog gets so excited it just does a little bit of- you get the picture.

⚹In a much similar fashion, Chara can also RESET, which brings the world right back to the original starting point. Mind, their fashion of RESET can be a little less pleasant than Frisk's for everyone involved. Nerfed completely in game.

⚹ LOVE (LV) is determined by the state of gaining EXecution Points (EXP). EXP can be explained as the action of emotionally distancing yourself from the harm you cause, thus being less susceptible to damage, and more capable of causing larger amounts of harm. This is also influenced by a monster's willingness to be hurt, however Chara is intensely strong in LV, making them a formidable opponent. They can keep going despite significant damage due to this disconnect, and will also pack quite a punch or stab wound pick your poison.

⚹SOUL resonance is an ability adapted from Maka within Sol Raveh; this ability allows SOULs to communicate emotionally. Whilst this does not offer particular advantages in the setting, this ability may allow characters a greater understanding of each other, or potentially provide them with encouragement to continue on.

In regards to nerfing for the game, Chara’s ability to RESET will be nerfed entirely, as it’s pretty much game-breaking no matter which setting you have. They will be limited to one SAVE point per day; subsequently, they will only be capable of LOADing this SAVE once per day. Attempts to LOAD further will leave them severely weakened and, if not in peak physical condition, potentially knock them out cold.

What the heck are these, you might ask? This is the part where I list a few things and, in the event you want to do one, you ask for permission. It's that simple. Literally that simple.

PLEASE ASK FOR PERMISSION BEFORE DOING ANY OF THE FOLLOWING

Stalking my character- currently or for any amount of time in the past. Generally I wouldn't mind people following their public conversations on solnet , but please ask for permission if your character is going to jump one of those threads. Stalking includes:

Physical stalking- in person.
Over the phone- be that reading things that are noted as private on solnet, reading/listening to their IC inbox, tracking them via their phone. Additionally, if your character is stalking someone else who they're doing any of the aforementioned to, sorry. Permission still required.

Infomodding- this can be particularly difficult, as some people are more liable to view this on a case by case basis. Generally speaking, infomodding in this circumstance can be considered the following:

Any information your character has not learned directly from mine, another character, or an event (such as the memory event).
Any information you assume is handwaved but hasn't actually been discussed.
Any information that would be considered "meta"- such as your character knowing Undertale as a game.

Godmodding- We all understand this one, as well. If we're rping a fight, make it a fair fight. Don't assume your punches land, just throw the punch. Don't just grab my character and drag/teleport/direct them and expect that's a-okay. Chat to me about this. Godmodding is easily avoided when there's communication involved.

Please be respectful to me and everyone else you're playing with; think before typing and discuss whenever you're not sure about things. Best case scenario, if this isn't done, is that I ask you to delete your comments; which really isn't a best case scenario at all when you could be ten tags past that.
